Hannah's thesis-- redheads + Caroline

Democracy is a dialectic between the individual and the community: the individual sacrifices to better the community, but the community must allow the individual certain basic rights.

  1. What does the individual sacrifice?
What happens when these rights are violated? Can the individual then rebel? Or is that a right that he/she has sacrificed?

  2. OK, good, but in what way are they two different things--individual and community? I agree that this brings up the question of complacency. When does the individual "sacrifice" and when does he stand up for her rights? Who determines "basic rights?" Is it really that simple? Do we just know them?
